Artist Statement

On That Whole Outsider Art Thing

Through art I communicate the inner workings of a neurodivergent life. As Rilke wrote, “Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.” Love becomes an infinite series of mixed-media goddesses, mythical creatures, and re-imagined fairy tales. Method is embracing non-method, listening to inner voice, embracing mind, opening heart.

Many of these paintings are a prettied expression of the electrical storm taking place in my epileptic mind, and where I go for shelter. That explosion of color and distortion, the journey home to vision and clarity. While my brain rewires, I create order of ionic chaos with acrylic, ink, and charcoal. Zigs and zags are trees, lightning, radiant sunbeams. Dark demons elevate into beings of light and elegant forces of nature within the realm of spiritual surrealism.  When creative expression in any form happens, the artist is communicating with the viewer or listener. This is a peek into the space where I heal, and if I've done anything right here that energy can be shared with you, or inspire you to find your own sacred form of expression in which to feed your soul and soothe your mind.
