Things to Do in Augusta, Maine: The Gallery of Maine Art

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

Calm Before Lee. 2023

There was a gala event last week at the Gallery of Maine Art. What's the Gallery of Maine Art, you ask? Welp, it's something extremely cool they've done with the Evergreen Hotel on the Leighton Road in Augusta.

So, there's the hotel, there's a wine bar, and there's 40 Maine artists. It's fabulous. And I'm so happy to have a couple pieces in there.

Wolf Moon On Fox Island. 2023

The common theme of Evergreen artwork is all Maine, all the time. Beyond Maine artists, there's got to be something about the work that feels very Downeast. The Calm Before Lee is a fairytale vision of Somes Sound right before Hurricane Lee's touchdown....which hit Mount Desert Island HAHHHD this summah. And I've already talked about Wolf Moon on Fox Island, which was in the Waterways show back in August. Something I don't really get into much when talking about what my painting process is? My color palette is pretty much all colors from Maine ocean, woods, fields, lakes, ponds, mountains.

These are my marine colors. Always. I don't go into a painting planning on going this route, but then I find the same colors turning up again and again when I work. And why, despite the fact that it's doing terrible things to me --I've been watching a lot of House-- I can't seem to stop working with alcohol ink, all the distress oxides, all the gold leaf, and all the metal alloys. They give the mica, quartz, garnet like nothing else. I'm going to stop geeking out, now, since this post was going to be about the Evergreen Hotel, the Gallery of Maine Art, and the Hearthside Wine&Tap.

This is our long foliage and apple weekend, as well as Maine Crafters annual open studio, so I'm just going to cut my post short and put their link up so you can book a room:
